A chance meeting with a viscountess, and Lily is invited to the ball. Freed from dowdy gowns and worthy reading, Lily charms Society. Except for the cold, aloof - and wildly handsome - Mr. Jack Alden. Lily soon learns that Jack's cold demeanor is belied by the warmth of his kiss. But at the end of the Season she must return to bleak normality. Unless wicked Mr. Alden can save her from a future of good behavior….

If you are looking for a short and sweet read, then this is the book for you. Since a decent traditional Regency is often hard to find, I am always pleased when one crosses my path. Deb Marlowe is a good storyteller and her characters always leave me happy to have spent time with them.

In this loose retelling of Cinderella, Miss Lily Beecham has been living the life her mother wants, but due to a chance meeting with a viscountess and her son Jack, she has the opportunity to start living the life she wants. And that life is one of love and beauty, not one filled with charity work, dowdy dresses, and preaching about sin.

Jack and Lily were a good fit. Jack had recently had a run in with a very murderous and bad man where he was shot. This event left him rethinking his scholarly ways and allowed him to be open for Lily, who had also just had a run in with death that left her rethinking her life.

I enjoy a good retelling of an everyday fairy tale, and this book was no exception. I was a little lost in parts because our hero Jack was in a previous book by Marlowe that I hadn't read, and some of the plots spilled over. Nothing too terrible though. By the end of the novel I felt caught up and didn't mind missing out on the event that changed the course of our hero's life.

Bottom Line: While this book isn't complex, I read it quickly and enjoyed a taste of sweet Regency love.
