Lord of Fireby Gaelen Foleyreviewed by Cybil SolynJanuary 2002, 432 pages, Publisher: Ivy Books, ISBN: 0449006379 Back Cover Blurb: After years of preparation, he has baited his trap well, luring the depraved members of society into his devil's playground so he can earn their trust and uncover their secrets. Yet no one in London suspects that Lord Lucien Knight is England's most cunning spy. Now an unexpected intruder has invaded his fortress of sin, jeopardizing his carefully laid plans – and igniting his deepest desires. Beautiful, innocent Alice Montague finds herself at the mercy of scandalous 'Lord Lucifer.' But as he begins his slow seduction to corrupt her virtue, Alice glimpses a man tormented by his own choices, a man who promises her nothing except his undeniable passion.
After completely wowing me with THE DUKE I have been waiting with baited breath for Gaelen Foley's next book to come out. I needed to know if that book was a one hit wonder or not. So when her next book arrived on my doorstep – I did what any self respecting romance reader would do! I skipped out on my job, told my boyfriend to take a hike, (something I was VERY sorry for later on…if you know what I mean *wink wink*) and sat back to read her newest book LORD OF FIRE.
Not many can mix the gothic style of Wuthering Heights with the seductive prose of Loretta Chase, but Gaelen has proven herself worthy once again with her newest installment of the Knight family.
Set on living a lonely and sad life in the shadow of his twin brother Lucien, the "other twin", is a dark tormented spy pretending to be a heartless libertine. The isolated mansion that his real father (now that's a story in itself!) left him is his headquarters. From there he holds secret debauches where he can listen to the underground murmurings of the spy community. Everything is going as planned until "Miss Goodie Two Shoes", Alice Montague, falls into his life and it is love at first sight for Lucien.
Both Lucien and Alice are everything I have come to love in feisty characters with hidden secrets, but the truly astounding piece of LORD OF FIRE is the sexiness of the entire book. Each page not only progresses the plot and the depth of the characters, but is a spicy mix of foreplay leading to the final culminating seduction of both Alice AND Lucien!
Bottom Line: If you haven't read Gaelen Foley now is the time to start.
| Johanna S. | say it again! | 2002-01-17 | Sybil, I adore your site, and I ADORE Gaelen Foley's new book. After reading your THE DUKE review and seeing "better than beverley" I had to go get it. And now with LORD OF FIRE she has shown what a terrific writer she is.
THANK YOU. Thank both of you! Thank Gaelen for ground breaking books and everyone at Rakehell for a place I can go. | | | | jodie p | highly recommend! | 2002-02-08 | | I agree that this book was excellent. Reading it was like eating dark chocolate...yummy, decadent but not too sweet. The heroine was a strong girl who didn't completely freak out when she had huge opportunity to. She deserves brownie points for that. The hero was absolutely luscious (Lucien the luscious...works for me), and well fleshed out. A very good book by a very good author. | | |
