A Covent Garden Mystery is the sixth book in Ashley Gardner's Captain Lacey Regency-set mysteries. Captain Gabriel Lacey has developed an acceptance of his life that had been missing before. He has found love with Lady Breckenridge, his friendship with Lucius Grenville is meaningful and his work in resolving the mysterious deaths that he encounters is rewarding. The last thing he expects to see in the markets of Covent Garden is his missing wife and his daughter. The manipulative James Denis has brought Gabriella and the Auberges to London to force Lacey further into his debt.
Bow Street brings Gabriel in on the mysterious deaths of young prostitutes who inhabit Covent Garden. His progress has been stalled until his daughter goes missing. Gabriel will move heaven and earth to find his daughter before she too is killed, while his friendship with Lucius suffers some severe reversals when Gabriel is forced to keep secrets.
Ms. Gardner has crafted an excellent mystery to add to her continuing series of Captain Lacey. We see the increasing efforts of James Denis to bring Gabriel under his thumb; although we don't know Denis's reasons for wanting Gabriel indebted to him. His relationship with both Grenville and Lady Breckinridge have helped dispel his melancholia so that Gabriel has become an even more interesting character. Historical mystery fans should love this one!
